The Society’s Japanese Language School exists to encourage the study of Japanese language in our community by providing access to high-quality and affordable Japanese language classes. JLS offers classes from beginner to advanced skill levels. JLS also holds preparatory classes for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).

General Registration: July 26th – August 23rd
Please read the terms and conditions and class descriptions in the below class catalogue carefully before enrolling.
Fall Term: August 31st – November 29th
All classes are conducted online via Zoom, making it easy to participate from anywhere.
Class Schedule
Classes are 90 minutes long and meet Monday through Friday during one of the following time slots: 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm ET/ 7:10 pm – 8:40 pm ET

Finding the Right Level
If you are unsure which class is the best fit for your current Japanese level, we encourage you to take our self-assessment placement test. The test can help identify the course that most closely matches your skills and learning goals.
JASWDC Member Discount
All JASWDC members receive discounted tuition for JLS classes.
- Ume and Tsutsuji members receive a $35 discount in addition to the Early Bird discount.
- Kiku members are eligible for complimentary JLS classes.

How to Register
Register for Your Class
- Review the Class Catalog and select the class that best matches your Japanese level.
- Complete your registration and payment online. Your spot in the class is not reserved until your payment has been successfully processed.
- If you register during the Early Bird registration period, the discount will be applied automatically.
- JASWDC Member Discount:
- Ume and Tsutsuji Members: Please log in to your account using the same email address associated with your JASWDC membership before registering. Your member discount will be applied automatically after you log in.
- Kiku Members: JLS tuition is complimentary for Kiku Members. Please contact us at language@jaswdc.org before registering so we can assist you with your enrollment.
- After completing your registration, you will receive an automatic confirmation email and payment receipt.
Before Classes Begin
- Within one week after the registration deadline, JASWDC will send a reminder email to all registered students.
- Classes require a minimum enrollment of four students to open. If a class does not meet the minimum enrollment, it may be canceled or combined with another class. If this affects your registration, we will contact you to discuss available options, including transferring to another class, subject to availability.
- Before the first class, your instructor will contact you using the email address provided during registration with your Zoom link and any additional class information.

Waiting List
- If your desired class is full, please email us with the subject line “Waiting List for JLS“ to be added to the waiting list.
Cancellation
- Cancellation requests must be processed manually by the JLS Office. If you need to cancel your registration, please contact us.
- Refund eligibility is subject to our published Cancellation Policy.
Changing Classes
- Students may request to change classes with their instructor’s approval, provided the request is submitted before the second class of the term.
- If you need to change classes due to personal circumstances (such as a change in your work schedule), you may request one class change before the second class begins.
Certificate of Completion
- Students who attend at least 60% of the classes during the term are eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion. Eligible students may request a certificate at the end of the term.
- Please note that completion of JLS classes does not constitute certification of Japanese language proficiency and is not equivalent to passing the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) or any other Japanese language proficiency examination.
