JASWDC President Ryan Shaffer Receives Consul General’s Commendation at Portland Sea Dogs “Japan Night”

WASHINGTON, DC – The Japan-America Society of Washington DC (JASWDC) is proud to announce that its president, Ryan Shaffer, was awarded the Consul General’s Commendation by Consul General Takahashi. The presentation took place on July 29 at the inaugural “Japan Night” hosted by the Portland Sea Dogs, a celebration of Japanese culture and friendship held at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine.

The Consul General’s Commendation recognizes Shaffer’s significant and lasting contributions to promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the peoples of Japan and the United States.

During the event, Consul General Takahashi spoke about the enduring bond between Japan and the United States, highlighting baseball’s role as a cultural bridge. He acknowledged the historical legacy of Horace Wilson, a Gorham, Maine, native credited with introducing baseball to Japan more than 150 years ago. A February event commemorating Wilson’s contributions spurred the formation of a committee to erect a monument in his honor.

The festive evening featured traditional Japanese performances, including taiko drumming, and was attended by several notable guests, including Maine State Representative Ellie Sato, Portland Mayor Mark Dion, and representatives from the Portland Hearts of Pine soccer club, player Masashi Wada and coach Yuta Nomura.
