明けましておめでとうございます。

On behalf of the Nichibei Kyokai of Washington DC (JASW), I would like to thank you for your generous support during our 60thAnniversary year and am very pleased to send New Year’s greetings to all of you.

As we enter into 2018, we should look at the New Year and see the future of the US-Japan relationship. It is important to carry on the special relationship of the US and Japan. The future of the relationship is in the next generation of young people. Although, JASWDC provides many cultural and educational programs throughout the year, we would like to introduce two programs, Japan-in-a-Suitcase and National Japan Bowl that are helping to teach the next generation in the US-Japan relationship. These two programs are for the community and are the base for strengthening the relationship. JASWDC needs your help to strengthening these programs. You can volunteer, or let people know about them.

Japan-in-a-Suitcase (JiS) is a free program which packs a little bit of Japan in a suitcase and brings it to area children at schools, libraries and festivals. This program promotes understanding of Japan and Japanese culture staring with children in first grades, and this past year we started providing the service to middle school students. Volunteers teach students about Japan with hands-on activities, games and demonstrations. Anyone can request to have this program through our website or by contacting us.

Japan Bowl® was created by the JASW in 1992. It is an academic competition that tests the achievements of high school students throughout the US, who are studying the Japanese language. But the Japan Bowl goes beyond language. It also tests the student’s knowledge of Japan, the country.

JASWDC would like to also stand with and thank the Japanese teachers in the Washington DC area who are inspiring the next generation of young people in the US-Japan relationship. They are at the center of fostering this relationship.

ワシントンDC日米協会（JASWDC）を代表致しまして、昨年の記念すべき60周年に皆様からいただきました温かいご支援に感謝すると共に、新年を迎えられますことをお慶び申し上げます。

2018年を迎えるにあたり、新しい一年に、友好な日米関係の未来を見据え、日本とアメリカの特別な関係を維持していくことが重要です。この素晴らしい日米の友好関係の未来は、次世代の若者たちが担っていくものです。日米協会では、年間を通して多くの文化、教育プログラムを提供しておりますが、その中でも特にジャパン・イン・ア・スーツケースと、全米ジャパンボウル大会は、次世代の日米関係を担う若者の育成を目的とするものです。この二つのプログラムはコミュニティーのために提供しており、日米関係を強化する土台となるものです。これらのプログラムをさらに発展させるためには、皆様のご協力が必要不可欠です。ボランティアをしたり、これらの教育プログラムについて、周りの方々に広めていただくことで、支援いただければと存じます。

ジャパン・イン・ア・スーツケース（JIS）は、日本の学校で使用するランドセルや教科書などをスーツケースに詰め込み、DC近郊の学校や図書館、フェスティバルなどを訪問して日本を紹介する、無料で提供しているプログラムです。小学一年生以上の生徒を対象に日本と日本文化についての理解を促進するためのプログラムで、昨年からは中学校にも出向き始めました。スタッフやインターンはもちろんのことボランティアの方々にもご協力を頂き、実践的なアクティビティやゲームまた実演を交えて様々な日本を紹介しています。どなたでもウェブサイトを通して、または直接、日米協会にご連絡いただくことで訪問をリクエストして頂けます。

1992年より開催されているジャパンボウルは、学校で日本語を履修しているアメリカの高校生の日本語能力を競う大会です。この大会では言語だけではなく日本の文化・習慣・社会等についての学生の知識を試し、毎年、日本のことが大好きな学生たちの熱いバトルが繰り広げられます。

またDCエリアには様々な場所でご活躍されている日本語教師の方々が沢山いらっしゃいます。日本語教師の皆様は日米の絆をさらに強める核のような役割を果たされております。次世代の日米関係を担う人材育成のために日々尽力していらっしゃる日本語教師の皆様にも感謝の気持ちを申し上げます。

本年度も、皆様と共に日米関係の未来である次世代の育成に取り組めることを楽しみにしております。
